YOU WILL NEED
Derivan Pouring medium. Coverage for example a 250ml Bottle will cover 40 x 40cm board.
Acrylic paint or acrylic inks to tint pouring medium.
A solid surface to paint on like an Artist canvas board or wooden board.
Several plastic cups (10-20 cups).
Plastic gloves.
Disposable craft sticks.
Squeeze bottles (Derivan 136ml Refillables bottles are ideal).
Spirit level OR iPhone/Android levelling app.
TIP ONE
Mixing paint and medium in a 1:10 ratio is a good place to start. If you want a more opaque finish, use more paint. For lighter shades, add less paint. For heavier shades, add more paint. EXAMPLE: 90ml pouring medium with 10mls of colour
TIP TWO
Don’t be too rough when mixing the paint into the medium. Mixing slowly will prevent air bubbles from forming, which can end up in your work. When mixing paints, mix in small quantities and work with one colour at a time. If you’re making custom colors, pre-mix your paints first then mix with the pouring medium.
TIP THREE
Once your colours have been mixed, pour them into Derivan Refillable Bottles. These squeeze bottles are perfect tools for creating acrylic pouring techniques. Perfect for working with a few different colours stops you from getting into a mess.
TIP FOUR
Keep it level.
One of the most important things you can do to prepare your pour is make sure your surface is completely level other wise your paint will end up dripping off your chosen surface. Use a *Spirit Level and adjust the surface elevation or your iphone has a hidden spirit level in your apple compass app or try Bubble level 1.4 for Android.
TIP FIVE
Place the chosen surface on top of three plastic cups. This prevents the medium and paint from sticking to the worktable. You can also use reusable putty (eg Blutack) to secure the back of the chosen surface and bottom of the plastic cups. This will keep your surface level so it dries with a professional finish.
* Try pouring the medium without any colour added, to encourage transparent areas of colour on your work!
