Lang Lang Gravel 7mm
Five distinct grades of sand, all mined at Lang Lang in Victoria, range from a very fine grain to coarse multi-coloured small gravel. The multicolour happens when the quartz has inclusions of hematite. Sand is a naturally occurring mineral that is created from erosion of rocks, whether granite or limestone. These mediums have all been washed and cleaned, so that artists do not have to worry about impurities making their way into their artwork. These Matisse Dry Mediums provide a range of textures that can be used effectively in paintings, mixed media and collage. Only the smallest grade should be used in small quantities on collograph plates. Suitable for both abstract and realistic work, the gradation of the size of the grain from large to small allows for realistic texture effects to depict distance in landscape and similar works. Mix the sand with MM2 Impasto Medium, MM4 Gel Medium, MM6 Polymer Matt Varnish (water-based), MM7 Gloss Varnish and Gloss Medium, MM28 Polymer Satin Varnish (water-based) or MM30 Matt Gel Medium to bind the sand before applying to the work. It is important not to make the mix too dry, however best results are obtained by adding it relatively generously. The results range, according to the grade used, from a relatively restrained texture with the finest grade, to a grainy, bumpy texture at the largest gravel. As the sand is quite heavy it is not recommended to use large quantities on large canvases. Oil painters can mix Lang Lang Sand with their favourite appropriate oil painting mediums, however it is recommended that testing should always be done before the medium is used on artwork.
