Ideal for coating paper or canvas for drawing in pastels & charcoal, Ground Quartz gives the artist a superb working surface. This mineral is hard and quite transparent. Also known as crystal silica, it is produced from quartz sand and quartzite. Its texture is slightly rough, spherical and quite even, unlike Wollastonite, which is relatively uneven. Up to 50% Ground Quartz can be mixed to undercoat for extra ‘tooth’ or texture for pastels or other media, when mixed with paint such as Matisse Background, MM6 Polymer Matt Varnish (water-based), MM10 Gesso, MM12 Clear Sealer, MM27 Low Viscosity Gesso or MM28 Polymer Satin Varnish (water-based). This will result in a surface which is perfect for working with soft pastels (use Wollastonite for hard pastels). Ground quartz is also suitable for use on collograph plates. Suitable for mixing with oil based underpainting.
