Ferrous powder is a dark grey iron powder suitable for decorative use on paintings and mixed media. Ferrous Powder is exceptional in that it can be used to make magnetic coatings. By adding the ferrous powder to the paint (30% to 50% ferrous powder by weight) the resultant coating will hold most average magnets. The resultant surface should be sealed with a clear coat of solvent based varnish (MM14 Final Varnish Gloss Finish (Turps-based), MM15 Final Varnish Matt Finish (turps based) or MM29Final Varnish Satin Finish (turps based) to avoid oxidation occurring especially outdoors.
Sprinkling this powder should be avoided, to ensure no small particles fall and cause rust spots where they are not wanted. Care should be taken when using this medium on large canvases as its weight in areas of high build may cause the canvas to sag.
For a special effects ferrous powder can be rusted. Use with MM2 Impasto Medium, MM4 Gel Medium, MM6 Polymer Matt Varnish (water-based), MM7 Gloss Varnish and Gloss Medium, MM8 Spreader Medium or MM30 Matt Gel Medium. And leave to react with moisture in the air (we do not advise the use of oxidising agents to speed up the process of rusting as they may effect the stability of the rest of the film. therefore Caution should be taken when mixing as rusting may occur. If you do not want the powder to rust it must be mixed with with MM14 Final Varnish Gloss Finish (Turps-based), MM15 Final Varnish Matt Finish (turps based) or MM29Final Varnish Satin Finish (turps based).and then a clear coat of one of these varnishes over the top to completely close off the ferrous powder from contact with the air.
